No better way to spend Thanksgiving morning than doing something that you are incredibly thankful for. Even if I didn't PR this race that would have been okay with me because I am lucky enough to be able to run. I went out there hoping to run a sub 50 minutes (previous PR 54:45). Big Mike decided to pace me and I was so excited...we started the race and 2 miles in I realized this was going to be a bad race, my calves hurt and were super tight, it was terrible. Big Mike said I could take a little to try and stretch it out, I did...losing seconds/maybe a minute. Got back running and around mile 3 I was still in pain and thought trying to PR this race would not happen...so one last stop, I loosened my shoe laces. Well I should have just done that the first time, after that I was fine (well mostly my calves were still a little tight but not as bad). Big Mike and I rolled into the finish at a 50:23, which is over a 4 minute PR for me! No doubt if there hadn't been calf issues and I hadn't stopped twice I would have been sub 50 minutes.
Not every race will be a PR and that is okay and that is also to be expected, there will be aches and pains during races...it is important to know when to push past the pain and when to realize that the pain is bad and not to push it. This race the pain was partially because I was stupid and tied my shoes too tight. I am incredibly thankful for DWEP and my coach Dennis Welch,
