I am only backdating a few races because these are significant in my running history.
Weeks prior to shamrock I had leg pain, I took it easy, reduced milage and cross trained. The week prior to shamrock I did NOT run because my leg had hurt, I had some symptoms of a stress fracture...but not all the symptoms and not the most common so this left me confused and wanting to run the half still. I went to my doctor and he said it should be fine and just to take time off after the race.
Thats what I did, the day before the race I went on a 2 mile run and if I felt any pain I was going to back out and not run, but I didn't have any pain so game on! Shamrock 1/2 marathon here I come!
The race was awesome, no pain and a PR a 1:54!! But while waiting on Maryanne my leg began to hurt...I quickly realized I had just made a HUGE mistake by running. That night I headed back to Longwood and during the next week I could barely walk on my leg...I called my mom balling...what in the world is going on with my leg. I am in Farmville with no specialty doctors and my insurance only covered the ones back in Chesapeake anyways. So we made an appointment and the closest one was in April (two weeks away). By the next week my leg had began feeling a little bit better, so I tried to run...only got a mile or so in before the pain came back.
The doctors appointment....ugh well he couldn't tell from the x-rays so I had to get an MRI done...another week later I got the phone call I still remember to this day...it was such a rough conversation...I began to cry as he diagnosed me with a tibial stress fracture in my right leg. I didn't know exactly what that meant but I knew rest would probably be crucial. O was it he told me to "shut it down", shut it down what the hell does that mean, you are telling an extremely active person to go from 100 to 0! So I did what I thought was shutting it down, i still biked, swam, and went on 2-4 mile walks a few times a week. I still had pain so I called him to ask what I was doing wrong, I went over everything that I was doing, I really thought I was shutting it down, I mean I wasn't running. He told me to halt it all and not do anything, for at least a month until I went to seem him. Reluctantly I did as he said, late May I saw him and I got the only to swim and in June I could lightly bike ride. He also said by the end of June I could start walking again. So I started small and built up, he said I should be ready for Rock n Roll 2011 but I knew better and opted out of running that race...one smart move on my part.
While this was one of the hardest times so far as a runner I am glad it happened, if I had kept running the way I was my running career would have been shortened and I would have probably been done in my 30's.
